Largest Countries in the World

The area of the world

According to modern estimates, the Earth’s surface area is 510,072,000 square kilometers, with 71 percent covered by ocean and only 29 percent as dry land.

The measurements of area in a country

Every country has two different measurements of the area. One is the land area, which includes all the land and only the land. The other is the total area, also known as the country area, which consists of the land area and all areas occupied by lakes, reservoirs, inland rivers, and sometimes coastal and territorial waters.

That means  Total Area = Land area + Water bodies (lakes, reservoirs, and rivers)

Some countries show a significant difference between these two measurements.

For example, Canada has a land area of 8,965,590 km² whereas its total area is 9984670 km².

The United States has a land area of 9,147,420 km², whereas its total area is 9833517 km².

Canada’s more than two million lakes and inland waterways make it the largest country by total area, even though the United States has a greater land area.
